This year our work world transformed, like many other companies, as we were sent to work from home in mid-March amidst a looming pandemic. By March 18, all of Lionakis’ staff brought home all office equipment and supplies in order to work from home. Two weeks to slow the spread resulted in many creating a make-shift desk out of a dining room table and other temporary spaces throughout our homes. As weeks turned into months and the COVID-19 situation became more severe, our work from home status became more permanent. Just like millions of others, Lionakis employees and staff have learned to transform and adapt to the changes around us throughout the last nine months.

In the early part of the year, we had the privilege of being able to attend a few in-person events including the Healthcare Project Delivery Conference and the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (C.A.S.H.) Conference. At the C.A.S.H. Conference, we celebrated receiving an award for the new Dyer Kelly Elementary Replacement Campus in the San Juan Unified School District. Many of our staff were also able to attend a Sacremento office Design Bar in February for the Structural Engineering Studio, Mardi Gras-style. Then, at the beginning of March, we extended sincere condolences to the family of Iva Oree Lionakis, wife of our firm namesake, George Lionakis. Iva passed away on February 29, 2020 at the age of 98. We continue to celebrate George and Iva’s partnership and work with Lionakis as part of our enduring legacy.

Since working from home, and throughout 2020, we have continued to share achievements and celebrate socially distanced events together in each of the milestones and successes of the firm. From major groundbreakings and the completion of transformative designs and new buildings, to the ways in which we continue to remain busy at home through newfound hobbies. Several staff welcomed newborn babies and adopted pets and we took a moment to celebrate all of the 2020 graduates. 2020 truly has become a challenging yet transformative year for us all.
